Geothermal Heat Pumps vs. Air-Source Heat Pumps






What's the difference between geothermal and air-source heat pumps?

There are two basic types of heat pumps. Geothermal heat pumps extract heat from underground and air-source heat pumps can draw heat out of exterior air to heat your home.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps extract heat from an underground source, and then transfer the heat to increase the interior temperature of your home.

The Good:

- More efficient than air-source heat pumps

- Ground-source and water-source heat pumps are available

- Very low maintenance

- Easily recoup cost with energy savings

- Continues to work in colder climates

The Bad:

- More expensive than air-source heat pumps

- Potentially challenging and costly installation

- May require significant excavation

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Air-source heat pumps absorb heat from exterior air and then transfer it inside to heat your home.

The Good:

- Easier to install

- More efficient than a traditional furnace

- More affordable

- No excavation required

- Air-to-air and air-to-water options available

The Bad:

- Not ideal for colder climates

- Typically require back-up system

- Above ground units vulnerable to weather damage
